Nkosinathi Maphumulo, more popularly known by his nickname Black Coffee was born in eThekwini on 11 March 1976 and celebrated Nelson Mandela’s release by marching. Unfortunately a momentous event took place while doing this celebration when Maphumulo was struck down by an auto with no headlights on and sustained severe Brachial Plexus injury which required surgery before continuing his education at Technikon Natal (Durban University of Technology now) where he majored in Jazz Studies.
Madala Kunene served as his assistant. Alongside fellow schoolmates, they formed Afro-pop shANA (Simply Hot & Naturally African). Although Maphumulo lived through some difficult circumstances growing up, his passion and persistence enabled him to go on and achieve incredible success as an Afropop DJ and Grammy award-winning artist.
