Hunter died peacefully on 3 January 2024 at IWK Health Center with his family by his sides, leaving behind a legacy of courage and joy. He also left an indomitable, unbreakable spirit. Hunter was born in San Jose Costa Rica, 2008 and despite his brief life, he left a lasting impression on all those who knew him. He is an inspirational testament to young people making a difference with courage, love and perseverance.
Who Was Hunter Marsden?
Hunter’s life was a constant celebration of love and laughter, from his first days in Costa Rica to his last moments. Hunter’s passion for life was apparent in his swimming lessons, family beach fun and creative uses of mangoes to make soccer balls. Hunter’s joyful spirit brought joy to everyone he met. He also showed great affection towards his sister, who he welcomed with an open heart and lots of love.
Hunter’s love for soccer began in 2012 when he moved to Nova Scotia. His enthusiasm and talent were palpable as soon as he joined HCU Soccer Club. Hunter embraced video games with enthusiasm when they first came out. He quickly mastered every game, while also coaching other players and enjoying late-night gaming sessions with friends. His competitive nature was evident not only in his battle against Cancer but in all his games.
What was the battle of Hunter’s like?
Hunter’s courage and determination in fighting cancer was inspiring. His strong spirit did not falter during his treatment, despite being diagnosed after days of soccer and games. He continued to be the jokester who kept people laughing, even on difficult days. Hunter became their hero!
In his battle, Dr. Bruce Crooks and Shelley Rice at IWK Health Center along with Dr. Daniel Morgenstern from SickKids played a crucial role. Hunter’s fight was made easier by the tireless efforts of medical professionals to find treatments. Hunter, his family and friends from Nova Scotia up to Toronto all contributed.
How will Hunter be remembered?
Hunter had a rich and passionate life, full of experiences and passions, before he succumbed to tragedy. Hunter left behind strong family ties, competitive spirit, humor and laughter as hallmarks of his legacy. All those touched by Hunter will always cherish his unyielding bravery, strong willpower and zest for life as we commemorate him today and in years to come.
On January 20th in Tantallon at St Nicholas Anglican Church in Tantallon, Hunter’s family and friends will gather to remember his life while sharing in our sorrow. Hunter’s family asks that donations instead of flowers be sent to the IWK Oncology Family Support Fund, as his legacy continues through helping others.
