WhatsApp currently allows Android users to backup their chats without incurring an impactful Google Drive storage usage fee, but this will soon change: as of Q1 this year, WhatsApp chat backup will count towards Google Drive storage if you are Android user; Google offers 15GB for free across its service tiers with this plan providing additional space than is likely exhausted quickly with what may become less than 15GB storage being consumed by WhatsApp chat backups as they also include photos – especially since 15GB seems so insignificant when considering that 15GB may only last as far.
Google Drive also offers extra storage at just Rs 35 monthly; to learn more, read on!
Sign up to Google One today and gain 100GB extra storage for WhatsApp! For those unfamiliar, Google One is a subscription plan associated with Google Drive which offers monthly or annual plans with different storage capacities: Basic (100GB), Standard (200GB) or Premium (2TB). During Google’s special offer you can buy these plans starting from Rs 35/month; Standard plans cost 50 rupees while premium packages start from 160.
This fee only lasts for three months before regular charges will apply again.
Discounts of up to 50 per cent are now being applied to Annual Basic and Standard Plans, meaning Basic will cost Rs 300 in three month cycles and Standard plan will only cost Rs 160 instead of 690 over that same timeframe. Unfortunately, Premium Tier plans will not receive this reduction in cost.
Google Drive storage discounts coincide with a change made by WhatsApp: beginning in early 2024, WhatsApp storage space for users will count against their Google Drive quota – forcing more individuals to pay for Google Drive storage space if their quota exceeds 15GB. Google’s timing coincides with this shift by offering affordable options to expand beyond this initial 15GB threshold.
Google may also be hoping to entice new customers by providing them with an opportunity to experience all the advantages of Google One at an discounted price before committing to paying its standard rates. Convincing people who value price over storage could prove challenging in India where people tend to be price conscious about cloud services like this one.
