Kerri Roger, a teacher and coach who inspired hope and resilience, died peacefully on January 11, 2024, at the age of 44, after battling esophageal carcinoma for 44 years. Kerri Roger’s unbreakable spirit, despite the physical and emotional challenges of fighting a disease that was uphill for her, allowed her to continue changing lives through her education advocacy work. This article is meant to celebrate Kerri Rogers’ life and the legacy she has left behind.

A Unyielding Advocate of Education and Students

Kerri Rogers’ love of teaching is more than just a career; it’s her vocation. Kerri Rogers, her former math teacher at John Jay high school, was known for her ability to solve problems in the lives of her students as well as mathematically. Kerri went above and beyond curriculum-based teaching by forming special connections with every student, especially those who were experiencing difficulties at home or school. Kerri demonstrated her commitment to the students by providing supplies, tutoring, food, and holiday gifts. She also spent time with them and showed her heart.

Kerri Roger, born in Poughkeepsie on May 2, 1979 to John Halsted Roger and Susan Halsted Roger, both union activists and long-time educators, passed their passion for education onto her. Kerri Roger was raised by educators who instilled in her a passion for education. She earned a master’s from Mount Saint Mary College and National Board Certification.

A Life of Service, Dedication and Commitment

Kerri’s dedication to service extended well beyond her duties in the classroom. She adopted sick children through the Friends of Jaclyn organisation, demonstrating her love and dedication towards them. Kerri was devoted to others, whether it was athletes, students or her family. She also stood by her mother in her battle against cancer, despite her own health issues.

Kerri’s career was not confined to the teaching and coaching professions. She was an adventurer who traveled extensively (often chaperoning trips for high school students across different countries), loved dogs (especially her Doberman Paper/Husky mix Loki), and displayed resilience and positivity in an indomitable and positive spirit.
