Life in the sky
Jim Tweto first came to Alaska on a hockey scholarship; But the passion for flying soon surpassed this initial goal, inspiring his journey as a bush pilot across Alaska to Unakleet. Tweto began by working as an Army Corps of Engineers welder before switching to boat building at Shaktolik, then eventually was drawn back to flying with Unalkaleet as his base – now a major part of rural aviation development throughout Alaska
Tweto dedicated himself to his work. Not only a pilot, but he was known for pouring concrete at the airport and loading planes – everything needed to keep things running smoothly Former pilot Ben Pedersen noted how Tveto went above and beyond to help his community through donations which he gave as best he could notice by flying.
The Alaskan sky is covered in love
Jim Tweto left an indelible mark not only for his skills as a pilot, but also for his kindness and generosity. This is known for his frequent waivers of funds for funerals and other emergency flights, and this was even demonstrated when one of his friends went missing; Tweto was soon airlifted to a search and rescue area.
At his memorial reception at the Alaska Aviation Museum, more than 300 people came together to pay their respects and remember this humble but generous man. Five planes flew overhead as part of this event, in honor of Tweto for his great blessing his life while flying.
