Forbes was raised in Drimoleague County Cork Ireland with four other siblings. Vincent and Mackie ran a bar in their village. She went to local and boarding schools before pursuing a history and political sciences degree at the University College Dublin.

Dee Forbes is a media personality with a long and distinguished career. Forbes, who was born in Drimoleague County Cork, Ireland on February 1, 1967, began her career after graduating from college in 1989. She began her career in the United Kingdom by securing an advertising job at the largest company, Young and Rubicam.
In just 14 years, Forbes’s career was re-directed in a major way when she joined Turner Broadcasting Europe. She held various positions, including director of advertising sales. She was later in charge of overseeing both the UK and Ireland. The division consisted of seven entertainment channels, such as Cartoon Network, Boomerang and TCM & TCM. This helped create a large audience.
Forbes, after her successful tenure at Turner Broadcasting and Discovery Networks Northern Europe where she served as President and Managing Director, moved to Discovery Networks Northern Europe. She was responsible for the Western European operation and managed 18 markets, 27 television brands, and served more than 270 millions households.
Forbes achieved a major milestone in her career on April 1, 2016. Forbes learned that Noel Curran would be replacing her as Director General of RTE, marking her entry into the world Irish public broadcasting. She was the first woman to hold the position in nearly 50 years.
Her tenure as Director general was not without problems. Forbes was fired from her post on June 20, 2023 due to unreported payments to broadcaster Ryan Tubridy. Forbes defended herself, but quit her job on the 26th June 2023. She was fired because she tried to negotiate cost savings with RTE, and retain Tubridy.

Dee Forbes, the former RTE director general at the centre of the Ryan Tubridy payment scandal, sent a medical certificate to the Dail Public Accounts Committee declaring that she was not fit to testify. The decision was made after PAC members discussed the possibility of legal action in order to force her presence during a closed door session. Forbes’s attorney provided the doctor note which did not disclose the condition that she was suffering.
The PAC has accepted the certification but is determined to have Forbes explain her role in the controversy surrounding Tubridy’s salary. Forbes was forced out of her job by the scandal surrounding Tubridy’s pay and unreported payments in June 2023. Despite serious concerns about her work and conduct, the PAC delayed any legal action to allow her more time to recover.
Forbes’ health is a concern because she has been sick for over five months. The committee expressed their need for her cooperation and insisted that she inform the Irish citizens who were paid by her. Dee Forbes’s pay was a subject of much debate when she served as Director General at RTE, the public service media agency of Ireland. In June 2023, the controversy began when it was revealed that RTE had paid Ryan Tubridy EUR345,000 higher than the amount disclosed publicly between 2017 and 2020.
