U.S. Embassy officials issued an alert to U.S. Citizens about the safety and security situation in Nassau following an increase in violent crimes such as murders in its capital city.
Violence on the Rise
Violence incidents rose alarmingly across the Bahamas in January 2024. 18 murders could be directly or indirectly tied to gang activity; 18 more reported. As such, U.S. Embassy issued a security warning warning both residents and tourists alike of potential risks present in public spaces or busy streets.
As a response, the U.S. State Department raised Bahamas to Level 2, cautioning travelers to exercise greater prudence when visiting. They utilize a four-tier system which assesses safety and security risks associated with different countries; Level 4 being their most severe designation.
A warning issued on New Providence Island advised people to remain “extremely cautious in its eastern region”, driving or walking at night carefully and resisting robberies as precautionary measures, among other precautions.
Two days later, the State Department issued its travel advisory which warned travelers against any attempts at robbery as well as opening doors to strangers.

Violence against residents of Jamaica is prevalent, including home invasions and armed robberies, sexual assaults, homicides and other violent crimes such as sexual harassment or even all-inclusive hotels, according to State Department’s advisory. Sexual assault is especially rife.
