O’Neill was both an Ursuline football player and steel mill employee, receiving both scholarships to Ohio University where he received an athletic scholarship, yet left after only two years due to sports and social activities taking up most of his attention. Subsequently transferring to Youngstown State University as an active Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity member (where he also played football).

After being released from the Steelers, O’Neill returned to Youngstown State as one of the initial students enrolled in their newly established theater program. Soon thereafter he made his Broadway debut in Knockout before landing a role in “Cruising”. Unfortunately his television series “Popeye Doyle” wasn’t renewed despite rave reviews.

O’Neill first rose to fame after making an impressionary cameo appearance as Al Bundy in “Married… with Children”, in 1987. Since then he has appeared in other movies, TV shows, commercials, and voice over work including Sergeant Joe Friday in Dragnet and Jay Pritchett in Modern Family (each for which earned Emmy nominations). Additionally he voiced several commercial characters for commercials as well as Pixar’s Finding Dory movie series.
