Brian McGarry, a beloved Legislative member who was known for his selfless service to the public until his death last fall, was an icon of public service. McGarry, who served as minority leader in the Legislative, earned respect from all parties. Chairman Anthony Jasenski called him an inspiration for all legislators.
McGarry served his constituents unwaveringly despite his personal struggles. He bravely fought stage 4 prostate carcinoma in 2014 while continuing to serve his constituents in District 4. Representing Delanson and Rotterdam, he was well-known and respected throughout the district. Even in the later stages of his illness, he continued to be active by attending legislature meetings remotely and sharing candid stories about life experiences.
Beyond Politics
McGarry was a unique individual because of his contributions and multidimensional personality outside of politics. McGarry was a dedicated father and husband to six children. He deeply believed in Catholicism and dedicated much time and effort into education. His journey from videography for CBS6 to pursuing a Master’s in Education shows that commitment.
McGarry had a profound impact on students at Duanesburg high school where he taught a variety of subjects. Former students have shared stories of McGarry’s influence and inspiration that extended beyond the classroom.
McGarry himself was an exceptional photographer; from the 1970s until 2015 he ran his wedding photography business himself until handing it off to his daughter, Mary Magarry.
A Political Journey
McGarry’s political journey marked by integrity, thoughtfulness and honesty began in 2010 when he unsuccessfully ran for Rotterdam Supervisor position. This setback did not deter McGarry; it prompted him to become more involved in local politics, ultimately leading to his election to the County Legislature in 2013. He distinguished himself in his office by being able to speak out with clarity while still remaining respectful of colleagues and constituents.
McGarry demonstrated his unyielding dedication to public service with his relentless campaign against Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara of the 111th Assembly district despite illness and unsuccessful campaign results. However it showed his dedication and determination towards his community.
Lasting Effect
McGarry’s impact on his colleagues and acquaintances is still felt today. Colleagues and friends recall his honesty, his approachability, and his courage to stick up for his beliefs. McGarry’s influence was so great that he inspired others to join the public service, as evidenced by Joseph Mastroianni becoming a Rotterdam Town Board Member today.
McGarry’s influence on local politics was reflected in his satisfaction with the election of Eric Hess and Josh Cuomo to represent the District 4.
